15.09.23 We had a visit today from the literacy stories bus
A 14.5 tonne American school bus that has been converted to make it into an incredible book haven for children and families. With seating areas, book shelves, a ‘selfie space’ and soft furnishings, it is a space devoted to running literacy themed events, from writing and reading activities to storytelling performances and open mic poetry events. We take the bus directly to schools and community groups in Bradford where the need for more literacy support is greatest, encouraging reading for pleasure and engaging children and families with literacy in all it forms.
What’s so special about the bus?
- The bus means that children and families in Bradford’s communities will be able to see live storytellers and other creative artists and even interact with them – without the time and cost to travel to city-centre locations.
- The bus is a mobile library and event venue that allows us to reach the neighbourhoods where the literacy need is greatest. We take the venue to them and allow them to access high-quality experiences.
- We engage reluctant readers through the novelty factor of a big yellow bus arriving right into their own neighbourhood!
- The Bradford Stories Bus is instantly recognisable and generates a buzz of excitement wherever it goes meaning children and adults keep talking about it once the visit is over.
